Blog Post #6
In Tuesday’s class session we met for the 2nd to last time to put on the student showcase of all of the creative film projects. One of them that really stuck with me was the one titled Unraveling. The film starts with a futuristic community where a group of black people in ultra-modern attire congregate in a circle and begin to go about a magic ritual. The plot pivots to a contemporary urban setting where a black young couple pulls into a parking garage and is in a state of disagreement. The black young woman is in a state of frustration and irritation as she is upset by her boyfriend's friendship with someone whom she disapproves of; however, her boyfriend defends his friend. On the premise that since he’s had this friendship for so long, he knows that this friend has character integrity. Later, the black male and his white friend (whom Denise disapproves of) are getting high on the couch into the early hours of the morning. The white friend goes to condemn the television which shows Colin Kapernick and refers to him as a raging liberal. When the black friend attempts to reason with him regarding Kapernicks message and the overall presence his symbol has for the entirety of the African American community, the white friend stops him. Instead, he says, you are fine but the rest of them are not. As this is showcasing that his friend is in fact a soft racist who follows problematic rhetoric and notions by generalizing the black community and not being cognizant of socio-racial disparities embedded in the societal cultural normativity. Later, the black protagonist is confronted by a futuristic warrior who informs him that the future world is absent of all bigotry, racial hatred, and anti-blackness and it plagues the harmonious world of the future. The black future warrior describes that the only way to create a continuous state of peace is to forcibly remove parts that continue racial supremacy. The black protagonist pleads with the black futuristic warrior, and promises that he will teach his white friend to be better and essentially heal his bigotry, but is ultimately unsuccessful in doing so. In a turn of events, the black protagonist is incarcerated on faulty charges and his innocence depends on the testimony of his white friend. His white friend who is not incarcerated is living in his apartment and rejects the phone calls of the black friend. The future black warrior reappears with a noose, as it is applied that he is bestowing justice by removing sources of racial hate just as he originally attended to do.
